40-Hour Family Mediation Skills Training
April 8th 2027 - April 17th 2027
Family conflict mediation gives people who are divorcing or separated and co-parenting a creative alternative to the family courts for making decisions about their relationship, and how they impact their children’s lives. This alternative dispute resolution option is a cooperative and constructive way to resolve differences and plan for the future. Minnesota District Court requires that alternatives to court be considered early in the dissolution process. Expert instructors bring years of experience as a mediator, parenting time expeditor, parenting consultant and custody evaluator. The course covers family conflict resolution and emotional conflict surrounding family issues, as well as specific conflict resolution techniques for property and parenting dispute mediation. Special attention is paid to identifying families experiencing domestic violence. The experienced mediation trainers use demonstrations, role play, and other exercises for this mediation training to encourage interaction and reflection. Students learn from each other’s experiences related to dispute resolution and conflict management, and often form enduring professional ties.

I recently completed this mediation course, and it was an incredibly enriching experience. The program offered a well-structured blend of theory and hands-on practice, equipping me with valuable conflict resolution skills in a supportive learning environment. The instructors were not only experts in the field but also engaging and insightful, making the content both practical and easy to understand. I particularly enjoyed the interactive exercises and role-playing scenarios, which helped me gain confidence in navigating challenging conversations. What stood out most was the emphasis on active listening, neutrality, and creative problem-solving. The techniques I learned are applicable in both professional and personal settings, making this course truly invaluable. If you're looking to strengthen your mediation skills or enhance your communication abilities, I highly recommend it!

Although this is a standalone course, it pairs perfectly with the General Civil Mediation Skills Training course as the Family Mediation Skills Training course requires a deeper dive into laws pertinent to divorce, spousal maintenance, child custody, and marital asset division in addition to domestic violence awareness and child development theory. In completing the General Civil Skills Training course first, I had foundational knowledge to the steps/process of mediation which assisted in the application of those steps to the more dynamic environment of family mediation. The main instructors, Jana, Michelle, and Jennifer, are true subject matter experts. The course provided valuable insight into the complexities of divorce mediation, including financial considerations, property division, and the practical issues that arise when families navigate separation. The instruction on child development and the factors that influence children's needs during divorce was especially valuable. One of the highlights was the practice simulations, each with its own coach present. These simulations featured unique fact patterns and information unknown to the “mediator, providing valuable hands-on experience and an opportunity to apply the skills learned in a supportive environment. These exercises helped build confidence and reinforced the lessons we were learning throughout the course. Rather than simply presenting information, the course created an environment where participants could actively develop and refine their skills. I highly recommend this course to anyone interested in becoming a mediator or strengthening their conflict resolution skills, particularly those interested in family and divorce mediation. It was an outstanding learning experience that provided practical tools, a deeper understanding of the issues facing divorcing families, and the confidence to move forward in mediation practice. A big thank you to Tobin and the entire instructor and coaching team for delivering such a thorough, engaging, and worthwhile experience!

I am pretty happy with this mediation training! I learned a lot about family law as well as how to mediate specifically the agreements that come out of family law. I also feel like I learned a lot in general about conflict resolution and negotiation.

I completed the 40Hr Family Mediation Skills Training and there was so much information, however, I feel I was able to retain and use that information in my career goals without hesitation. We had a good group of people that I believe all enjoyed and got some good information from the group and the instructors. Just a great time and was very much worth the time, money, and effort! Great group! Thank you
